Caring for Your Garments: A Guide to Longevity, Repairs, and Personalization

At Rat des Champs, we believe that clothing is more than just something you wear—it’s a part of your story. Taking care of your garments not only ensures they last but also deepens your connection to the pieces you love. Whether you’re maintaining a favorite dress, making small repairs, or adding personal touches, caring for your clothes is an art that celebrates slow fashion and mindful living.

Here’s a detailed guide to help you keep your garments looking their best, make repairs at home, and even personalize them with our patch kits and alteration suggestions.

Washing Instructions for Longer Lasting Garments

Caring for your clothes starts with proper washing techniques. Different fabrics require specific care, and following these guidelines will help maintain the quality and longevity of your Rat des Champs pieces.

General Tips for Washing

  • Use Cold Water: Washing in cold water reduces fabric stress and prevents fading, especially for vibrant or dark colors.
  • Gentle Detergents: Opt for mild, eco-friendly detergents that are free from harsh chemicals.
  • Avoid Overwashing: Only wash your garments when necessary to preserve the fabric and reduce wear. Spot cleaning can often be enough for minor stains.

Fabric-Specific Instructions

  • Hemp and Organic Cotton Blends: Wash on a gentle cycle with cold water and lay flat or hang to dry to maintain softness and shape.
  • Lyocell: Use a gentle cycle with cold water and avoid wringing out the fabric, as it can weaken its fibers. Always air dry.
  • 100% Cotton: Wash with similar colors on a cold, gentle cycle. Tumble dry on low heat or hang to prevent shrinkage.

Making Repairs at Home

Small repairs can breathe new life into your garments and prevent minor issues from becoming major problems. Basic mending tools like a needle, thread, and fabric glue can go a long way.

Common Repairs

  • Fixing Loose Buttons: Secure buttons with sturdy thread and knot tightly to ensure they stay in place.
  • Closing Small Tears: Use a whipstitch or backstitch to mend small rips or tears along seams. For non-seam tears, a fabric patch can add durability.
  • Reinforcing Weak Areas: Inspect areas like elbows, knees, and cuffs for wear, and reinforce them with stitching or iron-on patches before holes appear.

Patch Kits for Repairs and Personalization

Rat des Champs offers custom patch kits to help you repair and personalize your garments in style. These patches are crafted from leftover fabric, aligning with our commitment to reducing waste and embracing creativity.

Using Patch Kits for Repairs

  • For Rips and Tears: Select a patch that complements or contrasts your garment. Use fabric glue or sew it in place for added durability.
  • Preventative Measures: Add patches to high-stress areas, such as knees or elbows, to reinforce the fabric before wear occurs.

Personalization Ideas

  • Artistic Touches: Arrange patches in creative patterns or clusters to give your garments a unique, personalized look.
  • Layering Patches: Experiment with layering different shapes and sizes for a more dynamic, textured effect.
  • Thematic Additions: Use patches that tell a story—floral patterns for romantic vibes, geometric designs for modern edge, or solid colors for a minimalist touch.

Hemming and Alteration Guides

Altering your garments is another way to extend their life and ensure a perfect fit. Whether you’re making small adjustments or a full redesign, these tips will help you get started.

Simple Hemming

  • Supplies You’ll Need: Fabric scissors, pins, thread, and a sewing machine or needle.
  • Steps:
    1. Measure the desired length and mark it with pins or chalk.
    2. Fold the fabric under, press with an iron, and pin it in place.
    3. Use a straight stitch to secure the hem.

Adjusting Fit

  • Waistbands: Add elastic or take in the sides for a snug fit.
  • Sleeves: Shorten or narrow sleeves to refresh a shirt’s silhouette.
  • Darts: Add darts to dresses or tops for a more tailored shape.

Creative Alterations

  • Length Adjustments: Turn a long skirt into a midi or a dress into a tunic.
  • Adding Embellishments: Use leftover fabric or trims to create ruffles, pockets, or decorative accents.

The Joy of Caring for Your Clothes

Caring for your garments is about more than just keeping them in good condition—it’s an act of mindfulness that aligns with the values of slow fashion. By washing with care, making thoughtful repairs, and adding personal touches, you transform clothing into cherished pieces that reflect your style and values.

At Rat des Champs, we believe in the beauty of imperfection and the stories behind every garment. By embracing repairs, alterations, and personalization, you breathe new life into your wardrobe while honoring the craftsmanship and sustainability at the heart of our brand.

We invite you to explore our patch kits and share your creativity with us—because every piece you wear should feel uniquely yours. Together, let’s celebrate clothing that lasts, tells a story, and leaves a lighter footprint on the world.

Making It Personal: How to Incorporate Your Wardrobe and Vintage Finds

At Rat des Champs, we celebrate individuality, creativity, and the stories woven into each piece of clothing. Our designs are crafted to be timeless and versatile, making them the perfect companions to the pieces you already cherish in your wardrobe. Whether you’re drawn to vintage finds, thrifted treasures, or staples you’ve had for years, incorporating these items into your Rat des Champs outfits is not only practical but also a way to make your style uniquely yours.

Here’s how to seamlessly blend your existing wardrobe and those one-of-a-kind vintage pieces with Rat des Champs to create outfits that are as personal as they are versatile.

1. Start with a Signature Rat des Champs Piece

Each Rat des Champs item is designed to stand out yet blend effortlessly with a variety of styles. Begin your outfit by choosing one of our signature pieces, like the Villager Tiered Skirt or the Townie Button-Up Shirt. These versatile garments serve as a canvas for your creativity, offering timeless silhouettes that pair beautifully with almost anything.

For instance, pair the Villager Tiered Skirt in denim with a thrifted vintage band tee for a casual, playful look. Or tuck a classic, tailored shirt from your wardrobe into the gingham version for a fresh and polished aesthetic.

2. Layer with Textures and Patterns

Vintage and thrifted items often bring unique textures and patterns that add depth to your outfits. Rat des Champs designs, such as the Oracle Appliqué Panel Dress or the Harbor Hat, are perfect for layering with these treasures.

Try styling the Oracle dress with a vintage cardigan or embroidered jacket for a bohemian vibe. If you have a patterned scarf or a lightweight shawl from a thrift store, drape it over your shoulders to complement the appliqué detailing. The Harbor Hat, available in denim or stripe patchwork, can add a playful and practical touch to tie everything together.

3. Mix Eras for a Playful Look

One of the joys of incorporating vintage and thrifted pieces is the opportunity to mix eras, creating a look that feels entirely new. Rat des Champs clothing, with its nods to the 60s and 70s, pairs beautifully with items from various decades.

  • A cropped jacket from the 80s can add structure to the flowy silhouette of the Villager Skirt.
  • Thrifted 90s leather boots can give a modern edge to the soft lines of the Oracle Appliqué Panel Dress.
  • A retro 60s handbag complements the nostalgic vibe of the Townie Button-Up Shirt, especially in gingham.

Don’t be afraid to experiment—style is all about blending the old with the new to express your personality.

4. Accessorize with Meaning

Accessories are an easy way to bring vintage and thrifted items into your Rat des Champs outfits. Think belts, jewelry, hats, or bags that add charm and individuality.

For example:

  • Cinch the Villager Skirt at the waist with a vintage leather belt to highlight your silhouette.
  • Add layers of thrifted necklaces or a pair of retro earrings to the Townie Button-Up Shirt for a boho-chic vibe.
  • Pair the Harbor Hat with a thrifted tote bag for a relaxed, casual look that’s perfect for a day out.

By mixing in meaningful accessories, you create a look that feels like an extension of yourself.

5. Focus on Color Harmony

Rat des Champs pieces come in versatile colors and patterns, such as the rich denim of the Villager Skirt or the soft gingham of the Townie Shirt. Use these as a guide to tie your outfit together with complementary tones from your wardrobe or thrifted items.

For instance:

  • Pair the chambray Oracle Dress with neutral or earth-toned vintage jackets to create a cohesive look.
  • Use pops of color from a thrifted scarf or shoes to contrast with the denim Harbor Hat or the gingham Townie Shirt.

Balancing colors allows you to create visually harmonious outfits while still experimenting with bold or eclectic combinations.

6. Experiment with Layers for Versatility

Layering is a fantastic way to adapt your Rat des Champs outfits for different seasons while showcasing your personal style. A thrifted turtleneck under the Oracle Dress or the Townie Button-Up Shirt can transition these pieces into cooler weather. Alternatively, layering the denim Townie Shirt over a vintage maxi dress adds a casual, effortless vibe to your outfit.

Think about layering pieces you already have—sweaters, coats, or long-sleeve shirts—and how they interact with your Rat des Champs garments. The result is a wardrobe that feels refreshed and uniquely yours.

7. Honor the Stories Behind Your Clothes

Part of the magic of Rat des Champs is the emphasis on storytelling, and vintage and thrifted pieces are often rich with their own histories. By incorporating them into your outfits, you create a look that tells multiple stories at once—those of your personal style, the eras that inspire you, and the memories attached to each item.

Whether you’re pairing a cherished heirloom with the Oracle Dress or styling the Harbor Hat with a thrifted jacket from a local flea market, these combinations add depth and meaning to your wardrobe.

Final Thoughts

Rat des Champs is about celebrating individuality, creativity, and connection, and your wardrobe is a reflection of these values. By thoughtfully incorporating your existing pieces, vintage finds, and Rat des Champs designs, you can craft outfits that are uniquely yours while embracing the ethos of slow, mindful fashion.

So dig through your closet, explore your favorite thrift stores, and experiment with Rat des Champs staples to create looks that inspire and delight. Because at the end of the day, your style should be as personal and versatile as the life you live.

The Fable of Rat des Champs: A Tale of Simplicity and Timeless Style

Where did the name Rat des Champs come from? It’s a question we hear often, so we wanted to share the story. This name, while playful, actually speaks to something fundamental about who we are and the lifestyle we champion. Rat des Champs is inspired by an ancient fable, one that has transcended centuries, languages, and cultures to bring a simple but profound message about life, values, and personal style.

This story—originally told by Aesop and later by the French fabulist Jean de La Fontaine in the 17th century—is known as “Le Rat de Ville et le Rat des Champs,” or, in English, “The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse.” The tale itself revolves around two mice from two very different worlds. The country mouse, who leads a quiet, humble life, invites the city mouse to their countryside home for a simple meal. While it’s not glamorous, it’s genuine, and there’s comfort in every bite. The city mouse, used to the finer things, is a bit unimpressed and offers to show the country mouse what life is like in the city, where the feasts are lavish, and luxury is never in short supply.

Together, they venture to the city, where the country mouse is dazzled by the riches on the table. But just as they’re about to dig in, a sudden danger—a prowling cat—forces them to flee. The city mouse explains that the constant threat of danger is simply part of city life, but the country mouse realizes that they’d rather enjoy the security and comfort of a simpler life, even if it means a less extravagant meal. The moral of the story? True value isn’t always flashy, and peace of mind is worth more than any luxury.

This age-old fable speaks directly to the Rat des Champs philosophy: slow, comfortable living that places high regard on the quality and integrity of the things we bring into our lives. The story is at the heart of our brand because it represents the simplicity and authenticity we hold dear in a world that often prioritizes speed and excess.

Embracing the Rat des Champs Lifestyle

The Rat des Champs lifestyle isn’t about trend-chasing, fast fashion, or unnecessary excess. Just like the country mouse, we value quality, comfort, and timeless style over the constant chase for what’s next. Our vintage-inspired collections embody this philosophy, blending style with function in a way that makes our pieces versatile enough for everyday life. Each item is designed not to be a fleeting trend but a beloved part of your wardrobe—pieces you’ll reach for time and again because they feel just right.

In a world driven by the fast-paced nature of fashion, Rat des Champs stands apart. We’re not just creating clothes; we’re offering a lifestyle choice for those who seek simplicity, comfort, and authentic style rooted in the values of sustainability and mindful consumption.

Why Slow Fashion Matters

The fable of the Town Mouse and the Country Mouse resonates deeply in today’s world of fast fashion and rapid consumerism. At Rat des Champs, we believe in “slow fashion,” where every item is crafted with care, consideration, and respect for both people and the planet. This means choosing sustainable materials, working with artisans, and creating small-batch collections that reduce waste and make each piece feel special.

In the spirit of the country mouse, we believe that good things don’t need to be rushed. Slow fashion allows us to focus on quality, ensuring that each piece meets our high standards for comfort, durability, and timeless style.

A Wardrobe with a Story

Just as the Town Mouse and the Country Mouse have a story to tell, so do our clothes. Each Rat des Champs piece is designed with a narrative in mind, inspired by vintage styles that echo the laid-back, free-spirited vibe of the 1960s and 70s. We want each piece to feel like it belongs in your life—not just for a season but for years to come.

Whether it’s a cozy sweater that’s perfect for slow mornings or a pair of pants you’ll wear on adventures near and far, each item we create is intended to integrate seamlessly into your everyday life. We design clothing that feels comfortable, looks effortlessly stylish, and most importantly, holds up over time.

Finding Joy in the Everyday

At Rat des Champs, we embrace the idea of finding joy in the little things. Just as the country mouse finds satisfaction in a simple meal and a quiet home, we believe that happiness often lies in the details. By choosing pieces that are thoughtfully made and timelessly stylish, you’re not only building a wardrobe but crafting a lifestyle that values the beauty of simplicity.

Each time you put on a Rat des Champs piece, we hope you feel connected to this philosophy. We want you to feel the comfort of quality fabric, the peace of mind that comes with sustainable choices, and the joy of wearing something that feels like you.

Rat des Champs: A Brand with Purpose

So, there you have it—the story behind Rat des Champs. Inspired by a classic fable, we’re a brand rooted in the values of slow living, timeless fashion, and the importance of finding joy in simplicity. We’re here to offer an alternative to the fast-fashion cycle, a chance to slow down, appreciate what you have, and fill your wardrobe with pieces that truly mean something.

Our brand may be small, but our commitment is strong. Each piece we create is crafted with purpose, designed to be a part of your story as much as it is a part of ours. We invite you to join us on this journey toward mindful consumption, sustainable choices, and, most importantly, the beauty of a simpler life.

Nostalgic Culture: Embracing the Past in a Modern World

Nostalgic influences have always been woven into the fabric of contemporary life, but today, we’re experiencing a cultural renaissance where nostalgia is celebrated in more diverse and exciting ways than ever before. With the growing love for vintage clothing, thrifted decor, and resale culture, revisiting the past has become a way of life for an entire generation. Through online communities, social media, and content-sharing platforms, we’re able to indulge in storytelling that’s rich with historical and cultural references—celebrating the past while shaping a unique present.

Personally, I find joy in identifying the little details and references within an outfit or a space, tracing influences and styles back to a moment or place in time. Even more magical is when a look or vibe resonates so deeply yet remains elusive, like a fleeting memory I can’t quite place. This love for nostalgia bridges generations, creating a shared experience that connects friends and family through fond memories, cultural nods, and shared stories.

Nostalgia as a Community Builder

What’s truly inspiring is how nostalgia is not just a personal experience—it’s fostering community in fresh, meaningful ways. It’s never been easier to bond with someone from a different city, country, or continent over a shared love for a specific style, era, or cultural moment. Nostalgia plays an essential role in bridging divides and creating a sense of unity across generations and geographies.

And nostalgia isn’t limited to individual experiences; it’s now a prominent feature in brand aesthetics too. In uncertain times, there’s comfort in looking back to simpler days, when life seemed less complex and more predictable. Brands are embracing the spirit of vintage culture, countercultural movements, and indie values, resonating with people seeking a sense of community and authenticity. This nostalgic revival brings together aesthetics enthusiasts who celebrate analog photography, retro typography, and visuals that echo past decades.

The Rise of Nostalgic Aesthetics in Fashion and Beyond

We’re seeing more brands emerge with bold, distinctive aesthetics, creating brand worlds that feel authentic, eccentric, and deeply nostalgic. The fashion industry, in particular, is witnessing a surge of brands that use their visual language to conjure up an era gone by, transporting us to times that feel familiar yet thrillingly new. The rise of aesthetic movements like cottage-core and the romanticization of the ordinary reflect our collective longing for nostalgia as a source of creative inspiration and comfort.

One example of this shift is in the resurgence of styles that celebrate the countryside lifestyle or vintage workwear—styles that embrace simplicity, quality, and a slower pace. For those of us in the Rat des Champs community, it’s about celebrating the spirit of countercultural movements, embracing an indie ethos, and cultivating a lifestyle that honors the beauty of the past while adapting to modern life.

Nostalgia as a Remedy to Modern Distractions

Nostalgia isn’t just about longing for the past; it’s also a way to find inspiration, grounding, and peace amidst the complexities of our modern world. According to The Pew Research Center, 60% of American adults feel too busy to enjoy life fully—and technology has only accelerated this fast-paced reality. Many of us yearn to step away from the constant notifications, endless scrolling, and information overload, to instead experience life through a simpler, less hurried lens. Nostalgia allows us to imagine a world without the chaos of modern distractions, a world where we can focus on the things that truly bring us joy.

Interestingly, nostalgia’s appeal isn’t limited to those who experienced these past eras firsthand. The YouTube Culture & Trends Report recently found that 82% of Gen Z actively seek content that evokes nostalgic feelings. This generation, though born in the digital age, is embracing nostalgic aesthetics and philosophies to reconnect with a sense of authenticity and creativity that feels grounding.

Nostalgia as a Creative Catalyst

Nostalgia does more than remind us of what once was; it inspires us to dream and create. In a world that often feels overwhelming, a dose of the past can spark fresh ideas and offer hope. It gives us permission to slow down, find beauty in simplicity, and appreciate the finer details of life. There’s a special warmth in those nostalgic moments, whether it’s the charm of an old photograph, the joy of rediscovering a childhood tune, or the thrill of wearing a vintage piece that carries its own history.

At Rat des Champs, we draw heavily on nostalgia to build a brand that’s both a celebration of the past and an invitation to embrace a mindful, fulfilling lifestyle. We’re not just crafting clothing; we’re creating a community, a place where people can share in the beauty of nostalgic culture, find inspiration, and bring a sense of timeless style into their everyday lives. Nostalgia, after all, isn’t just about looking back—it’s about using the past as a foundation to create something meaningful and new.

In a world that’s constantly moving, there’s something truly magical about pausing to appreciate the echoes of history. Nostalgia invites us to slow down, cherish the moment, and find joy in the connections that transcend time. So here’s to the warmth of vintage memories and the thrill of what lies ahead. In the end, nothing quite compares to the joy of feeling that familiar sense of nostalgia, knowing it connects us all.

Travels from the Summer of 2022: Bringing Rat des Champs to Life

We’re excited to share some news about what’s happening at Rat des Champs! This June, the Rat des Champs team took a long-awaited trip to Los Angeles to meet the talented development and production team at TEG, a fashion house dedicated to supporting small and independent designers. This trip was a major milestone for us, as it included our very first garment fittings—an experience that brought our designs to life in a way we’d been dreaming about for so long.

Over the past two years, like so many others, we encountered our share of challenges, from navigating closures to dealing with logistical and personal hurdles brought on by the pandemic. By the end of 2021, the future of Rat des Champs was uncertain. But as the saying goes, the light shines brightest in the darkness. At a crucial moment, we had the opportunity to work with the dedicated team at TEG, which brought a renewed sense of hope and purpose.

The First Fittings: A Dream Realized

Our trip marked the first in-person meeting with TEG and the chance to see initial samples of our dress designs. TEG brought these pieces to life with beautiful craftsmanship and attention to detail. Two distinct styles emerged from this collaboration, forming the foundation of the upcoming Rat des Champs collection. Standing in the room, holding our designs, and seeing them materialize was a powerful moment that underscored why we started this journey in the first place.

A Message to Dreamers and Makers

To all the self-taught creators and passionate makers out there: we want to share this message with you. Don’t give up on yourself or your dreams, no matter the challenges. It’s easy to feel limited by the walls of your studio or the borders of your hometown, but remember that there are no barriers too big to overcome with determination and vision. Seek out opportunities, embrace risks, and remain open to what lies ahead. Not every attempt will succeed, and setbacks are inevitable. But each experience adds to your growth, and every small step forward brings you closer to your vision.

Rat des Champs has been shaped by its own journey of ups and downs, and we’ve learned that resilience is key. We hope our story inspires you to keep pushing forward. Dream big, believe in your purpose, and remember that amazing things are possible—even in the face of obstacles.

Looking Ahead with Rat des Champs

Seeing our designs come to life has been an inspiring and energizing experience for our entire team. We’re thrilled to continue this creative journey with TEG, and we look forward to sharing more updates, behind-the-scenes moments, and snapshots of the Rat des Champs process with our community. Each step of this journey feels like a new beginning, and we’re honored to have you along for the ride.

Thank you for supporting Rat des Champs and being part of our story. There’s much more to come, and we can’t wait to share it with all of you. Stay tuned for exciting new designs and updates—this is only the beginning.

The Story Behind the Brand: Rat des Champs

Rat des Champs is a brand that blends vintage whimsy, everyday comfort, and eco-conscious choices. With the launch of our first line of essentials, we’ve brought together vibrant colors, nostalgic prints, and custom artwork inspired by the 1960s and 70s. Each piece reflects our love for these eras and the unique storytelling that breathes life into our designs. Through our collection, we aim to offer more than clothing; we want to invite you into a world where creativity flourishes and each item tells a story.

The Power of Nature: “Butterfly and Snail” – A Fable for Fashion

The inspiration behind Rat des Champs extends beyond fabric and stitches—it includes the timeless lessons from classic fables. One tale, “Butterfly and Snail,” beautifully illustrates the brand’s message. In this story, a butterfly, vibrant and adorned by nature, is scorned by a snail for its colors. The butterfly responds that it’s merely reflecting the beauty bestowed by nature, a reminder not to reject the ornamental when it’s a gift of the natural world.

This fable represents our philosophy at Rat des Champs: embrace individuality, celebrate beauty, and appreciate the details that make us unique. Just as nature adorns the butterfly, we believe clothing can celebrate our individuality and bring joy to our everyday lives.

Childhood Inspiration and Iconic Style

Rat des Champs is a culmination of inspirations, both old and new, that have shaped the brand’s vision. Growing up, I was enchanted by the folksy florals, patchwork quilts, and warm, nostalgic patterns of my family’s home. Laura Ashley’s charming florals and Betsey Johnson’s playful Alley Cat designs were some of my earliest influences, filling my world with vivid colors and imaginary stories. These pieces weren’t just fashion; they were a gateway to fantasy and creativity.

Our designs also draw from icons of 1960s style, particularly women like Francoise Hardy and Jane Birkin, who wore their clothes with an effortless joie de vivre. Their approach to style was about embracing life fully, and this is something we strive to embody at Rat des Champs—a laid-back, yet elegant approach to everyday fashion that brings joy to the wearer.

The Creative Collaboration: Art by Pinky

A unique part of Rat des Champs is our collaboration with artist Pinky, whose artwork infuses our designs with a special touch. Inspired by iconic illustrators of the time, such as Milton Glaser and John Alcorn of Push Pin Studios, Pinky’s artwork lends a bold, colorful element to our textiles and branding. This collaboration reflects our passion for combining vintage aesthetics with modern art, bringing each piece to life in a way that’s unique to Rat des Champs.

The 60s and 70s Influence in Rat des Champs Fashion

At Rat des Champs, every garment is a nod to the cultural and artistic richness of the 60s and 70s. This era was not just a time of groundbreaking fashion but also an explosion of creativity in music, art, and design. Our line draws from this vibrant history, incorporating whimsical details, bold prints, and earthy colors that evoke the free-spirited energy of those decades. Each piece in our collection is crafted to be timeless yet effortlessly modern, a reminder that great style doesn’t have to be fleeting.

Vintage Whimsy Meets Everyday Comfort

Our collection is designed to embody comfort without sacrificing style, blending retro inspiration with practicality for everyday life. We believe clothing should be as functional as it is beautiful, a philosophy evident in each item we create. Rat des Champs is for those who appreciate nostalgia, but also value comfort, quality, and sustainability. Our eco-friendly fabrics and careful attention to craftsmanship ensure that each piece can be cherished for years, a true investment in style and sustainability.

Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future

Rat des Champs isn’t just a brand; it’s a community, a celebration of stories, style, and the joy of dressing with intention. We’re inspired by great fashion icons, artists, and the timeless tales that remind us of the beauty in simplicity and authenticity. Our goal is to share this inspiration with you, to fill your wardrobe with pieces that not only look good but feel meaningful. Rat des Champs is here to help you write your own style story, one that’s filled with color, creativity, and a dash of vintage magic.

Thank you for joining us on this journey! As we continue to expand, we look forward to exploring more stories, colors, and designs that bring joy to the everyday. Here’s to celebrating the iconic inspirations of the past and creating timeless fashion for the future.
